CONTRIBUTORY PARENT (PEMANENT) 143 VISA
The Contributory Parent (Permanent) Visa Subclass 143 is designed for parents of an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. This visa category, introduced by the Australian Government, allows you to live permanently in Australia.
This visa requires sponsorship, and applicants must be sponsored by their child or their child’s spouse. Ideally, your sponsor should be over 18 years old and a settled Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen. However, there are cases where a child under 18 can sponsor you.
The Australian Government also allows community organisations to sponsor your application if:
- There is a relationship between your child and the organisation
- The senior representative of the organisation agrees to sponsor you
- The organisation is legally established in Australia
- The organisation has been operating in Australia for at least a year
- The organisation is financially stable
If you hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173), to gain permanent residency under the 143 visa, you must:
- Have an eligible sponsor who is willing to provide support for at least two years
- Be eligible to obtain an Assurance of Support, a legal document assuring the Australian Government that you will not rely on government support for two years after entering Australia on the visa
- Meet the health and character requirements
If you do not hold a 173 visa, you must satisfy the above requirements and also meet the balance-of-family test by having at least half of your children residing permanently in Australia, or the majority of your children residing permanently in Australia
The average global processing time for applications is around 6 years, but times may vary as eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Factors that can impact the processing time of your visa applications include the time for external agencies, such as health and police services, and the Government, to conduct checks and provide supporting information. However, you can ensure a faster processing time by lodging a complete application with all necessary supporting documents and promptly responding to any additional information the Department requests.
